Making and Taking: “Pictures” Reconsidered, curated by Nancy
Princenthal, is an exhibition of thirty–three artists of diverse
backgrounds, from the United States, Canada, and Israel.
Nancy Princenthal writes: This biennial results from an open
invitation to female artists “investigating the intersection of hand
produced and photographic pictures.”

Congratulations to all of the artists who were selected for the 11th Biennial Exhibition!
A.I.R. Gallery is excited to work with Curator Nancy Princenthal in this exhibition!

Nancy Princenthal is a New York-based critic and former Senior Editor of Art in America, for which she continues to write regularly; other publications to which she has contributed include Artforum, Parkett, the Village Voice, and the New York Times. Her monograph on Hannah Wilke was published by Prestel in 2010; she has also written essays for monographs on Michelle Stuart, Shirin Neshat, Doris Salcedo, Robert Mangold and Alfredo Jaar, among others. She is a co-author of two recent books on leading women artists, including The Reckoning: Women Artists of the New Millennium (Prestel, fall 2013). At present, Princenthal is writing a book about Agnes Martin. She has taught at the Center for Curatorial Studies, Bard College; Princeton University;Yale University, RISD, Montclair State University and she is currently on the faculty of the School of Visual Arts

The competition was filled with many creative and outstanding artists and artwork. Out of a total of 785 applications, 43 different artworks have been selected, resulting in an exhibition of 32 artists. There will be a variety of photographs, paintings, mixed media, as well as videos.
We look forward to seeing everyone enjoy this exciting collaboration!

The 11th Biennial Exhibition will have an opening reception on Thursday, December 4th, 2014 from 6-9pm

Together they create ways to engage viewers through mobile sculptures, street actions, and temporary site-specific installations. In addition to an extensive list of international exhibitions, they are also recipients of numerous awards, grants and residencies, and their work is featured in several prominent collections. More Info Awards Juror's Choice Award Donna Anderson Kam Donna Anderson Kam is a San Francisco based artist who's work is exhibited in San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles and New York. Donna creates large-scale drawings using photo based imagery to explore social issues. Kam sees our culture as one that is concerned with economic prosperity in spite of the consequences. Through media’s relentless messaging, we are encouraged to consume as a way of defining ourselves, while the environment becomes filled with waste. Inspired by stories gleaned from news articles often relaying tragic current events, Kam’s “Datelines” series represents the psychological tension and potential dangers of contemporary life amidst a backdrop of material consumption. We face an urgent problem: our current consumption patterns outstrip our planet’s available resources, and yet our society continues to produce massive amounts of cheap, disposable goods. With its complex history as a center of international commerce, radical politics, technological innovation, and cultural experimentation, the Bay Area is uniquely positioned to help solve this problem. Reimagining Progress features local artists powerfully critiquing our unsustainable status quo, exploring our society’s relationship to production, consumption, and waste while proposing alternatives that balance valuing people and planet with financial profit.

We live in a digital age, in which video chatting with someone in another country is often easier than visiting a friend across town. At the same time, we rely on physical spaces to facilitate connection and meaning — whether through a game of basketball at the YMCA, a visit to a village market, or a movement such as Occupy. What role do face-to face relationships play in today’s society, and how can we become closer in a world that privileges communication at a distance? The Brower Center is pleased to present the works of 20 local artists investigating these questions in our second juried show.
